Dangerous foods for dogs

Many foods we eat at home are safe for us but dangerous for dogs. Knowing them helps prevent poisoning and act quickly if it happens.
Highly toxic foods
- Chocolate and cocoa (theobromine)
- Grapes and raisins (can affect kidneys)
- Onion, garlic and leeks
- Xylitol (sweetener in gum and "light" products)
- Alcohol and foods with alcohol residues
- Macadamia nuts and some nuts in large quantities
Other foods to avoid
- Cooked bones that can splinter
- Dairy in intolerant dogs (may cause diarrhoea)
- Excess fat (pancreatitis)
- Salt and heavily seasoned foods
- Apple, plum or peach pits (cyanide)
Warning signs
- Vomiting or diarrhoea
- Lethargy or restlessness
- Excessive panting
- Tremors or seizures
- Loss of coordination
What to do if your dog has eaten something toxic
Do not induce vomiting without veterinary advice. Call your vet or a veterinary poison centre immediately and state what food, how much and when it was eaten. Keep the packaging if available. The sooner you act, the better.
