Dehydration

Dehydration

With the heat arriving, it's important to understand hydration. Dehydration is the loss of fluids exceeding what dogs take in through drinking or food. Higher-risk dogs include seniors, puppies, nursing mothers and small breeds.

Causes

  • Fever
  • Sunstroke
  • Lack of available water
  • Diarrhoea and vomiting
  • Burns or wounds with excessive fluid loss
  • Illnesses causing severe dehydration

Symptoms

  • Intense panting and increased heart rate
  • Loss of skin elasticity
  • Vomiting with or without diarrhoea
  • Low energy
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dry nose
  • Dry, sticky gums
  • Thick saliva
  • Sunken, dry-looking eyes
  • Reduced or absent urination

What to do

If you observe dehydration, go to the vet. In the meantime, offer fluids slowly and in small amounts.
