Puppy socialisation: essential guide

Socialisation is the process by which a puppy learns to interact positively with people, dogs, sounds and environments. The sensitive period runs roughly until 3–4 months, but it must continue afterwards.

Why is it so important?

A well-socialised puppy is usually more confident, less reactive and better able to adapt to new situations. Lack of socialisation can lead to fear, avoidance or reactivity in adulthood.

Recommended positive experiences

• Meeting people of different ages, always calmly
• Meeting balanced, vaccinated dogs
• Discovering urban and rural sounds gradually
• Getting used to car, collar, leash and handling
• Visiting new places in controlled environments

What to avoid

• Overwhelming the puppy with too many stimuli in one day
• Forcing contact when showing fear
• Taking them to high health-risk places before vaccinations
• Allowing overly rough play with large dogs
